Wasps Player Development Partnership (AASE)
Offering the perfect environment for talented rugby players to combine the highest level of competition with a continued education, The Henley College is the ideal setting for your development. You will have the opportunity to compete at the very highest level of college sport whilst completing your studies in a variety of engaging BTEC, A Level or Foundation courses.
Based between The Henley College Campus and Henley Hawks Rugby Club, the Rugby Academy AASE programme provides aspiring young rugby players with the opportunity to train in a professional rugby club environment alongside furthering their education. This is a fantastic opportunity for student athletes, serious about their rugby, to develop as players, compete at the highest level of College sport and complete an academic course suitable to their needs and interests. Using a structured training and development route, students are provided with everything they need to be successful at the top level.
We constantly strive to ensure the balance between academic achievement and athletic progress is maintained, and although the rugby element is important, it is the academic side of the programme that will always come first. We offer over 60 high-achieving A Level and vocational diploma courses (please see prospectus) , including many subjects not commonly offered at school sixth forms or other colleges, as well as apprenticeships and other opportunities. All AASE Students follow a full academic programme of study and our unique timetable allows for most subjects to be chosen.
In 2017, results in all areas of full-time provision improved. A Level pass rates rose again to 98% with high grades also rising a further 1% against a reported national drop. BTEC pass rates and high grades also rose and the College maintained its excellent record of BTEC results with three quarters of students achieving the highest grades. Class sizes are kept small and all students are supported by our fantastic team of teaching staff.
We have worked hard to develop the perfect all-round performance package to take your rugby to the next level. The level of support offered at The Henley College is designed to mirror a professional rugby club environment. Being on the AASE programme, you will have regular access to a range of professional services created to develop and improve you as an all-round player. You will also get the opportunity to compete in the highly competitive RFU AASE League, a competition widely renowned as the highest level of College sport. As part of the AASE squad you can expect the following support on a daily basis:
- Technical & Tactical Coaching: Forward thinking, creative and innovative coaches who will test your technical development and understanding of the game.
- Strength & Conditioning: Ensuring you are prepared for the physical challenge of competition.
- Physiotherapy: Specialist medical support to keep you at your physical peak.
- Sports Psychology: Developing your ability to cope with pressure when it matters.
- Sports Nutrition: To ensure you perform at your best by staying healthy and active.
PROGRESSION AND SUCCESS STORIES
Following completion of year 2, the majority of graduating students will continue their rugby and education at university or pursue opportunities that take them directly into the world of work. The College has established links with a wide range of universities and external employers. Previous students have been accepted at universities such as Bath, Loughborough, Warwick and Leeds where they have continued their academic studies and rugby careers. Others have moved onto full-time apprenticeships or work-based training. For the most talented players a Senior Academy Contract with Wasps is the ultimate goal. A number of graduates have succeeded at this level, whilst others have looked to the National leagues (Henley Hawks) to gain further experience.
Places on the programme will be offered based on prior experience, your rugby CV and performance in trials. Academically, applicants to Henley College will be required to meet certain criteria depending on the course you are applying for. If you have not achieved these prerequisites, there may be other options available to you. Our AASE squad compete at a very high level and applicants are expected to be capable of playing to at least County Standard. The AASE Group is comprised of the top 30 players within the College's Elite Sports sector, while the next best 30 players will form the AASE Development Group.
