Intermediate Apprenticeship in Children and Young Peoples Workforce – Level 2

The Intermediate Apprenticeship is for those who work, or want to work, with children from birth to 19 years in settings or services whose main purpose is childcare. Apprentices will learn the skills to ensure children are looked after, kept active, happy and nourished. Apprentices will also help children to develop social and practical skills.

Apprentices must complete 11 mandatory units and a selection of optional units to achieve the qualification.

 

Mandatory Units Include:

  • Introduction to communication in health, social care or children and young people's settings
  • Introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care or children and young people's settings
  • Child and young person development
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • Support positive children and young people's positive behaviour

Duration:

12 months

Training:

Apprentices will spend one day a month at college and have regular work based assessments.  There will also be extra sessions for functional skills if required.

Suitable for:

Those who are new to childcare.

Progression Routes

Progress on to the Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator)

 
  • Level 2 Children and Young People's Workforce
  • Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT at Level 1 (depending on prior grades)
  • ERR (Employer Rights and Responsibilities)

There is also the option to take Maths and English GCSEs (depending on prior grades)

 

Advanced Apprenticeship in Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator) - Level 3 

The Advanced Apprenticeship is for those who work on their own initiative, planning and organising their own work and/or supervising others, for example, a Nursery Nurse, Room Leader, Playgroup Leader or a Child-minder working in their own home.

This qualification is designed to help learners build the knowledge and skills that are required for working with children and young people from birth to five years. It will also teach the knowledge required for working with children up to seven years. 

Apprentices must complete 23 mandatory units to achieve the qualification.

 

Mandatory Units Include:

  • Support healthy lifestyles for children through the provision of food and nutrition
  • Support healthy lifestyles for children through exercise
  • Support physical care routines for children
  • Promote children's emotional we..-being
  • Understand how to support children who are unwell
  • Understanding legislation relating to the safeguarding, protection and welfare of children

Duration:

12 - 24 months depending on prior qualifications and experience.

Suitable for:

Those who have completed the Level 3 Children and Young Peoples Workforce  or those who have been working within childcare for some time.

Progression Routes

Level 4 Certificate for the Early Years Advanced Practitioner, foundation degree, room leader, nanny, child minder, SENCO, work based learning assessor, holiday clubs, opportunities to work abroad for holiday companies and private families.
